My Air Conditioning Unit Doesn’t Turn On

ac unit(2)Your home HVAC system plays a crucial role to your comfort and well-being. Unfortunately, most Florida homeowners experience problems with their AC units from time to time. Among these problems include failure of the HVAC system to turn on. To solve this problem, you must first know the likely the cause.

Air conditioners are generally designed to give you anything from 10 to 20 years of reliable service. However, even the most reliable AC units tend to suffer functional problems. Regular maintenance is important to ensure some of these problems are kept at bay. The following are some of the causes of your AC unit not turning on.

Wiring Problems

The wiring system within your unit or the one connecting your unit to an outlet can cause problems that may make the AC not to turn on. It is important to first check the circuit breakers in your power box to ensure nothing else contributes to the wiring problem except the AC itself.

Icy Buildup

Whenever ice collects on your condenser coils or other sections of your unit, your AC may fail to turn on or may not cool your home as efficiently as it should. To resolve this problem, the unit should be dethawed and the ice removed before the system can resume its operations.

Faulty Motors

Faulty motors can make your system to shut down completely. You will have to decide probably with the help of a technician whether you should have the motor repaired or it should be replaced.

Faulty Compressors

A compressor is a very important component of your HVAC system. Whenever the compressor becomes dirty or faulty, it should be cleaned up because failure to do so can lead to a complete shutdown of your system.

Dirty Filters, Condensers and Evaporators

Dirt can build up in an AC system and cause a breakdown making your system to fail to turn on. Ensure your unit is serviced regularly where the technicians clean all the internal components and change the filters where necessary. Most manufacturers have their own recommendations with respect to the changing of filters. Even if there are no recommendations, filters should be changed at least once in every three months.

Refrigerant Shortages

Refrigerants usually do not escape from the lines they flow in except through leakage. If your AC doesn’t have sufficient refrigerant, it may fail to operate correctly or even not turn on. You should always have a professional technician who occasionally checks the refrigerant levels and changes it where necessary.

Faulty Thermostats

A thermostat is more or less the controlling component of the HVAC unit. If it is faulty, a possibility exists of the system not turning on. If you have any reason to suspect this, try turning the AC unit on from the main unit; if it turns on manually then the problem could be the thermostat.

To solve these problems, you may either have to hire a professional to do an extensive repair and maintenance operation or do a total replacement if the component is beyond repair.
